Paris Couture Fashion Week: Valentino S/S14

Looking at Valentino’s Haute Couture SS14 is like falling into the fantastical world of the opera. With each gown inspired by an Italian opera composer such as Verdi and Rossini, creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have managed to translate the beauty and grace of the opera into gowns of luxurious tulle and silk that celebrates the feminine silhouette perfectly.

In keeping true to the opera theme, Valentino opened the show with a parchment-coloured tulle gown embroidered with a musical score. The gowns are in various shades of pale neutrals like grey and olive green – the perfect backdrop for the swooping drama of opera-inspired scenes embroidered onto the full skirts of the gowns in silks and satins.

It is indeed difficult to find another brand that capable of blatantly borrowing from another art and interpreting that art into another form with such success.
