London Calling Trump: Refugees Welcome

London Calling Trump: Refugees Welcome

London’s calling and we are mad. Check the “we”: this isn’t just for the journalists who got praised for all the negativity or the artists that are now flourishing in an era of digression. Frankly, shade to Theresa May for her behaviour a few days ago when appeasing newly-elected president Donald Trump.

The continuous chanting, from “Say it loud say it clear, refugees are welcome here” to singing “Ooh ah, oh Theresaaaa I want to know oh woah, how you sleep at night” to simply and effectively shouting “fuck Donald Trump” outside of 10 Downing Street, showed London had spoken.

The protest started at 6pm, yet thousands had already marched and made their voices heard. And isn’t it about time? We’ve all seen enough banners stating that this shit has been protested for too long. The solidarity by what felt like all corners of London was evident. The Londoners who frequently told me they didn’t need to give me a quote weren’t here for their 5 seconds of fame or for the gram. They were here to make their protest louder.

Just as their mouths and banners stated: we are indeed stronger together, and diversity is what makes us. Though a mixture of ages, colours and creeds were stomping down Westminster (I’m sure disturbing Theresa May’s tea), there was much understanding that we had been here once before as a world, as a nation, as humans. So what side of history did we want to be on this time?

No human is illegal. Nobody should be lost between borders, airports or war zones. And the billions who make up a religion are not to blame; nor are they the end to Western civilisations – especially those who aren’t money buddies or palace pals with connections to the man who is stirring this poison all over again.

So the jury’s out. We only hold hands with those who need us, not those that are too small to build a wall. Orange is the new whack.
