Focused Functionalism at SS/18 London Fashion Week Men's Day Three

As noticed already on XXY Magazine, “utility” has been a huge trend at London Fashion Week Mens SS/18. Whether influenced by the current political climate or recent social events, designers this season seem to be tailoring their concepts to a use.

The collections have a purpose, a reason for being, or at the very least make a statement that sets them apart from the common more abstract ideas designers often choose to base their work on.

The shows on Sunday truly solidified this theme, with Alex Mullins kicking off the day with a structural rollercoaster of warped classic shapes, stretched images, and asymmetrical silhouettes. Mullin’s captured the feeling of 90s perfume adverts presented to us through a black mirror into a distorted parallel universe. Models masked by digitally stretched printed images evoked a sense of blind consumerism, making Mullin’s work incredibly central to today’s modern issues.

John Lawrence Sullivan and Maison Mihara Yasuhiro were similar in their defiant, outsider image: models appeared untouchable, as though part of a  movement the audience could only imagine being accepted into. Sullivan’s shapes were strong and defiant, sunglasses and coloured contours streamlining each look and projecting them into a futuristic vision. Yasuhiro’s garments were oversized and patched with logos and band signs, chains clinking against the model’s legs as they walked, creating a rhythmic sound that over the music created a ritual-like atmosphere. The finale featured the group of models walking down together and standing proudly at the end of the runway, honing in on a group nature and sense of connection between the garments and their wearers.

Using the models as a group to add to the collection’s concept was also seen at Harry XU, where masculinity in all its forms was explored through hard, reflective exteriors on some models mostly at the rooms edge, leading into soft, flowing pieces worn towards the centre of the room that symbolized softness also present within masculinity. The idea being, the two co-exist within a man, just as they were shown together within the presentation space.

The day was rounded off with the highly anticipated Christopher Raeburn, who this season took his designs on an adventure. Taking inspiration from “The Long Walk” by Slavomir Rawicz, models walked in contrasting camouflage and bright red mesh; shapes influenced by outdoor wear for extreme weather and expeditions. Bright, bold colours and strong shapes conflicted with soft greys and flowing oversized anorak-like silhouettes, suggesting a modern take on the classic adventurer’s purely functional gear. The garments fit this season’s utility trend well, however twisting it to suggest that there can be fashion in the functional, and useful can mean more than simply plain and practical.
